When Women Were Dragons: A Novel By Kelly Barnhill Cover Image
$28.00
ISBN: 9780385548229
Availability: Should Be On Our Shelves Now
Published: Doubleday - May 3rd, 2022

The 1950s - Era of Domesticity...or so you thought. What if some of the women from that era weren't the quiet, contained, peaceful housewives we imagine them all to be? (Because obviously, they weren't) What if, when a woman couldn't contain her feelings (be it anger or joy) she transformed into a dragon and flew off into the sky? And what if the government tried to cover it up? Kelly Barnhill's first novel for adults was a fun blend of historical fiction and feminism and magic that made me rage and cheer all at once - for a young girl watching the ways the women around her navigated their worlds, and eventually learning to find her own way. - Kari

How to Be Eaten: A Novel By Maria Adelmann Cover Image
$28.00
ISBN: 9780316450843
Availability: Should Be On Our Shelves Now
Published: Little, Brown and Company - May 31st, 2022

Adelmann reimagines classic fairy tale characters and brings them to today - as contemporary women who have experienced extreme traumas and who have all been brought together for weekly group therapy sessions. Listen to them work together to get through their shit - but don't forget about the entity behind the curtain, pulling the strings that brought them all together. Can they every truly own their own experiences and have their real stories heard? Or does the media just control everything and turn it all into whatever gets the most exposure? And what happens to the real people behind the stories we see on the news - espeically once the media machine moves on to the next big traumatic event? This one kept me reading through the night, and thinking about news consumption long after the last page. - Kari

Night of the Living Rez By Morgan Talty Cover Image
$16.95
ISBN: 9781953534187
Availability: Should Be On Our Shelves Now
Published: Tin House Books - July 5th, 2022

Morgant Talty's debut short story collection is simply fantastic. A present-day life on the island reservation of the Penobscot tribe in Maine is flushed out in these lightly connected stories that range from moving to a new home, to boys running through the woods and playing their games, to home life and drug abuse and trying to get out of the rut you find yourself in. Extremely relateable, beautifully written - this young writer is being compared to the likes of Denis Johnson and Tommy Orange, and it's easy to see why.

Sea of Tranquility: A novel By Emily St. John Mandel Cover Image

Published: Knopf - April 5th, 2022

Worried that you could never love another book by this author as much as you loved Station Eleven? You are not alone! But, I've read this and I have to tell you: while the subject matter is completely different, the feeling you got when experiencing her previous novel is just as much a part of this book. Sure, it's not a pandemic novel, and there isn't any Shakespeare....but this book is beautifully written, with threads woven by a pro. If you enjoyed Station Eleven at all, you will love this one too. - Kari
