Wegovy is an injectable prescription medicine used for adults with obesity or overweight (excess weight) who also have weight-related medical problems to help them lose weight and keep the weight off.

Wegovy should be used with a reduced calorie meal plan and increased physical activity.

Wegovy contains semaglutide and should not be used with other semaglutide-containing products or other GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines.

The active drug in Wegovy is semaglutide. It belongs to a group of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists.

If you need help with weight management, your doctor may recommend treatment with Wegovy. It's a prescription drug used with exercise and a low calorie diet for long-term weight loss in adults with either:

a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher (obesity), or

a BMI of 27 or higher (which is considered overweight) and a health condition that's related to weight

Wegovy is a weight loss medication that is administered via injection and is prescribed to adults who are obese or overweight (also known as having excess weight) and who also have weight-related medical problems in order to assist these individuals in losing weight and maintaining their weight loss.

Wegovy is most effective when combined with a diet that is lower in calories and an increased amount of physical exercise.

Because it includes semaglutide, Wegovy should not be used with any other products that contain semaglutide or any other medications that act as GLP-1 receptor agonists.

It is not known whether this medication may be safely and effectively used with other weight reduction solutions, whether they are available with a prescription, over the counter, or as herbal supplements.

There is insufficient evidence to determine whether or not Wegovy may be taken safely in patients who have a previous history of pancreatitis.

There is a potential for Wegovy to induce several major adverse effects, including:

Thyroid tumors, perhaps including malignancy, are possible. If you develop hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, a lump in your throat, shortness of breath, or hoarseness, you should contact your healthcare practitioner immediately. There is a possibility that these are signs of thyroid cancer. In research with mice, Wegovy and other drugs with a similar mechanism of action were shown to produce thyroid tumors, including carcinoma of the thyroid. It is not known whether or whether exposure to Wegovy will result in persons developing thyroid tumors or a form of thyroid cancer known as medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).

Do not use this medication if you or any member of your family has ever been diagnosed with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), a kind of thyroid cancer, or if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, a disorder that affects the endocrine system (MEN 2).
